The Director of STEWARDWOMEN was privileged to be one of the Speakers during a Strategic Consultation on Family Law Reform in Africa held at the Fairway Boutique Hotel, Kampala, Uganda on 25th - 27th March 2024. The Consultation convened representatives from selected civil society organizations in Africa to raise awareness and mobilize collective efforts towards family law reform in Africa. The objective was to sensitize actors on priority issues relating to family law reform advocacy in Africa and set strategies on collaborative engagement with duty bearers at the national, sub-regional, and regional levels.

Further, the Consultation activated a visible and vibrant network based on three thematic groups focusing on civil, customary, and Muslim family law systems in the region. The Consultation was co-convened by the founding partners of the Africa Family Law Network comprising of the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights (SOAWR) Coalition represented by Equality Now to which STEWARDWOMEN & WOJE are members, African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), Musawah and Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA).

STEWARDWOMEN & WOJE recommended the following; mapping of national partners working on family laws in South Sudan aimed at establishing a national family law network; follow-up on the whereabouts of the current Family Law Bill for South Sudan in order to craft the next steps and finally, sensitization on family laws including on Maputo protocol , CEDAW and national laws. National laws.
